When I first picked up Assistant to The Villain I was browsing the book section of Target (as one does), trying to find something that would break me out of a reading slump. I want to say that it was the synopsis that hooked me (it is a really good synopsis to be fair), but ultimately, the little green frog with a crown on the back cover sold it to me.
In Assistant to the Villain, we meet Evie, who is having a bad day after a string of many bad days. After losing another job prospect and wondering how she is going to support her family, Evie has a fateful encounter with The Villain of the story.
The first installment of The Villain series had me giggling and kicking my legs like a schoolgirl. I laughed, blushed, and experienced secondhand embarrassment to the extreme. I loved it so much that I immediately re-read it right after finishing it the first time around. Assistant to the Villain brought me so much joy with its charm and witty narrative.
I was so excited to delve back into the world of Evie and The Villain when Apprentice to The Villain finally came out, and I was not disappointed. We start to see a more driven and resilient Evie as she faces new obstacles. While Evie is coming out of her comfort zone, we find The Villain struggling as he comes to terms with managing his increasingly unruly staff, his tornado of an apprentice Evie, and his nemesis the King.
I highly recommend that everyone give this series a try!
